When Can I Stop Reading?
As you read through the literature, you should ensure you have a good variety of sources. Don't just rely on one or two good books and research papers. If you make use of a good variety of sources, you'll find that you'll get to the point where you've either read all the information on topic, or you're reading similar material over and over again. When you get to this point it's probably best to focus on drawing your ideas together to prepare your literature review.
The point at which you reach this stage will vary depending on the topic you've chosen. If it's a relatively new area of research and little work has been conducted, your literature review may be fairly short. If, however, you're topic has been researched extensively for years it may take longer to reach this point and even then there may be more to read. If this is the case, you may need to re-think the focus of your literature review. If you're in doubt, speak to your lecturer/supervisor. |
