If You Don't Have The Equipment

Looking down a microscopeIf you don't have access to all the equipment/resources you need to carry out your research, it may not be the end of the world:

  • check if your supervisor has a budget that will allow you to purchase what you need
  • see what's available in your department/neighbouring departments/rest of the University and where possible borrow what you'll need. You are likely to need the support of your supervisor and possibly the Head of Department for this to proceed
  • If your research will directly benefit industry, a local company may allow you to make use of their facilities or they may even part-fund your research.

In some cases, you may find that limited access to resources means that you can't carry out your research exactly as planned. This isn't to say, however, that you can't modify your original research idea.
