Using Plates
A plate (photograph) can help the reader to visualise your results in a way that graphs and tables can't - they should be easy to interpret and require little processing by the reader. For example, the plate below was used to demonstrate the effect of temperature on the proportion of bud burst.

Plate 1. The effect of chilling temperature on Ribes nigrum bud burst. L-R: Control, -3.4°C, 0.1°C, 3.4°C, 8.9°C
Plates are most suitable for presenting small volumes of data, and graphs and tables may be more appropriate if you have larger data sets, however, there are several important factors to bear in mind if you're using plates.
