The Viva Voce

The Viva Voce, or viva for short, is an oral exam which you may experience in individual modules or in your final year of study, typically taken after you have sat your final written exams. External examiners sometimes use vivas to ask you about your experiences on your degree programme. However, they are more commonly used to evaluate your subject knowledge.

End-of-degree vivas are typically conducted by external examiners (academics from other Universities or colleges) and the format of the viva will be dependant on your University. In some cases, only border-line-grade students are invited to a viva; for others a cross-section of the class will be chosen. Of course, if your class size is small, you may all have a viva. Check with your School/department if vivas are used and if so, how candidates are chosen for the viva.

Students are often, understandably, nervous if they're asked to attend a viva. However, you can prepare for your viva, you can anticipate at least some of the questions and there are a few hints and tips that you might find useful.
